It all started exactly one week ago. We knew the day before that our grandma was very ill. We also knew several relatives were coming down to see her. For that reason, we were told to clean the house as soon as we got home. At 3:30 Joey, Angie, and I bounded off the bus happily, excited about seeing our cousins. We ate chocolate pudding as our after-school lunch, watched “OPRAH” on T.V., danced around to Footloose, and did basic cleaning.

I remember the phone kept ringing, interrupting me as I made supper. My mom called a couple times for messages and info about the relatives. One time my cousins called and we all talked to Katie. Katie is now 12, but we haven’t seen her since she was about 9 years old. There was a big dispute between Katie’s mom and the rest of the family that kept us apart. It’s hard to tell exactly when it started. It could’ve started when Grandma was driving at night with Katie in the car when Katie was about 6 or 7. My grandma accidentally went off the edge of the road and into the ditch. Katie wasn’t hurt in the least; in fact, she was sleeping in the back seat at the time, and when the car was stopped she rolled onto the floor and continued to sleep. But for some reason Martha was very upset. She wrote a cruel letter to my Grandma that is believed to have caused her to have a minor heart attack, which began a series of medical problems.

I think Lou had a lot to do with the bitterness between Martha and the rest of the family which developed later on. Lou is Martha 2nd husband. She remarried about 4 or 5 years ago, after having written to him several times. That is how they met. I think it was Martha who put the ad in the paper about wanting a pen pal. They began to write to each other, then talked on the phone. After a while, Lou came to visit and soon they were married. Ever since then, things became heated. Lou is a quiet, fat, and bald man. He barely talks to the adults and never smiles. One of the first things he did were to make Katie give all her toys away. Many were given to us. Soon Katie was calling him “Daddy,” whether by force or choice, I’m not sure.

It is also believed by some that it started a couple summers ago, when we all got together to clean Grandma’s house. Apparently George made a small comment to Martha that some of us already knew what we were getting. George doesn’t remember saying that, but Martha said he did & ever since Martha’s been writing extremely wicked letters to Grandma, saying we were stealing her [Grandma's] money, we were not letting Martha have any of Grandma’s things, and that she was going to take us to court when Grandma dies. Then she tells Grandma that she [Martha] & Jesus love her, & we’ll be punished by God.

Grandma died; big blizzard.

Mom, Dolly, and Angie left early to visit Grandma. Dale, Nancy, and Jenny were already there. They were gone until late (around 8:00, I think). Dale & his family never stopped at the house, so I didn’t see them. Aren’t my new “I’s” really wierd? I just need practice. I didn’t get out of bed until afternoon, then I sat around all day. What a lazy person I am! I want to be a teacher some day. I also want to go to Spain the summer after I graduate. Denice Stifler might go. Mr. Jaden, my Typing II teacher, is always so optimistic. I’m so glad I have him. He inspires me.

Valentine’s Day. I got 2 Valentines: 1 from Sarah Thomas & 1 from Micky Vance. Of course, I can’t expect much when I didn’t give any out. Susie’s in my room again tonight. This time she’s asleep, though. In case you’re interested, I took a shower tonight. Some group had a terrific bake sale today, but all I had was a $20.00 bill & 2 nickels. The food is usually 25¢. Another group was selling 3 different flavors of popcorn, another nachos, and yet another carnations. I didn’t get anything. And I love chocolate brownies! I’m tired. It’s taking me forever to write this. Martha wrote another letter to Grandma. She says we’re mean because we didn’t invite her to see Grandma on her birthday. You don’t need an invitation to visit Grandma!

We barely made it to mass. I grabbed around 20 kleenexes before I left, plus a package in my purse. By the time the mass ended, I’d used up all but 1. We went straight to the nursing home, where Grandma was watching Little House on the Prairie. We watched that for 45 minutes until the relatives finally showed up. While the grown-ups talked, us kids went to the basement. Joey & George went one way and us girls went to the vending machines. Jenny lost 50¢ in the pop machine, then my peanut butter cups got stuck in the other machine. I put 50¢ more in, so I got 2 packages. Jenny filled out a form so they could mail her the money. Later, her p.b. cups got stuck. She tried my trick, but when the first came out, the second got stuck.

We found out the relatives aren’t coming to our house at all. Dale, Nancy, Jenny, Gladys, Trudy, Dolly, Patti, and maybe George are going to the nursing home around 11:00. We’re going to the 9:30 mass & we’ll meet them there. Mom & Angie made Grandma a real nice cake tonight for Grandma’s 72nd birthday. It was rectangular. All our cakes are rectangular, but Mom did make me a round one on my 16th or 17th birthday. I was so happy. It’s supposed to be around 20o below 0o tomorrow. I’m glad Francis brought wood recently. My nose is really sore and runny right now, but Mom said I’m definitely going tomorrow no matter what. I hope it’s cold enough on Monday for school to be closed.

The relatives are coming down on the weekend for Grandma’s birthday. She will turn 72, I think, on February 6th. I semi-cleaned my room today. The floor is nearly cleared. I finally dumped out my bra & slip drawer to get rid of the uncomfortable ones. I must’ve tried on 30 bras! I got rid of about half of them. I went with Angie, Ashley Ozmet, & Ashley’s mom Nicki to the Jefferson orientation so they might get a “personal” tour around the premises. They served cookies & milk afterwards. Angie & Ashley are both going to be sophomores next year. In a couple years Jefferson is going to enroll freshmen at Jefferson. I’ll be gone by then. I cut my bangs tonight before I went to bed. They look a lot better now. We won’t get our semester grades ’til Wed.

Carl goes to a college in Wisconsin. The last time we saw him, he was going to be a cop. But yesterday he said he found out something about the judicial system he didn’t like so now he’s going to be a history teacher. Both careers seem funny for him because he used to be (& probably still is) a goof-off. We saw Twins today with Danny DeVito & Arnold Schwartzenegger. It was really funny. Carl left yesterday after we got back from the nursing home because some “girl friend” of his in Wisconsin was cooking him a meal. He met a girl named Cheryl when he was out with Jeff Friday night & yesterday at the nursing home, he met her again! Apparently she works there & even knows Grandma pretty well. How romantic! I picked my schedule for my senior year tonight. It was difficult.

Saturday, 28 January 1989

I’m writing about the 28th on the 29th because I fell asleep before I could on the 28th. Carl (my cousin) called yesterday (the 27th) to say he was coming to see Grandma in a couple of hours. He came after I left with Mr. O’Malley and was with Jeff when I got back. He stayed at Jeff’s & I didn’t see him until today (the 28th). We went to see Grandma who seemed to be doing a lot better than the last time I saw her. She has an inner beauty that shows up in her eyes when she smiles. We went to the mass there and the priest sang “Happy Birthday” at the end of the mass for all the recent birthdays. He sang so horribly, that Joey laughed out loud. He said Angie made him laugh because she was snickering quietly.

I had to wash my phy ed clothes by hand tonight. We haven’t been to the laundromat in days (more like weeks). After church today I walked Susie around so she could sell her Brownie cookies. Then we all went to see Grandma at the nursing home. She was pretty tired & I don’t think she talked at all. Dale, Nancy, George, Jenny, and Trudy all came down, despite school & work tomorrow. We left around 4:30 & went to the Lerners. Mom went in for “a few minutes.” After 1/2 hour, Susie went in. A little later, Joey & Angie followed. I sat in the car complaining about things until I cried. At 1/4 to 6:00, we finally left & went to St. Bart’s, where they were having a Volunteer Appreciation Festival in the basement. There were hotdogs, nachos, & ice cream, & some name tag drawings. We won 4 prizes! What Luck! I cheered up.
